Houghton Mifflin English has partnered with SafeAssignment, a leading provider of technology to detect and prevent student plagiarism. The goal of this partnership is to help instructors teach students to prevent plagiarism by learning to document their sources and ideas properly. With the rise of widespread access to online information and access to electronic document databases, Houghton Mifflin is committed to helping professors better educate their students to avoid plagiarizing in their papers. How SafeAssignment Works:

SafeAssignment™ gives students the ability to prevent accidental plagiarism in their papers and practice proper documentation skills. This service helps professor correct plagiarism-free papers by providing assurance of student originality and documentation.

Using the SafeAssignment™ service, students submit papers that are checked against four different databases: the most complete and current index of the Internet; a database of term papers from password-protected “paper mills;” all student papers submitted to SafeAssignment within the same institution; and thousands of electronic books, newspapers, magazines and journals.

Submitted papers are then processed into originality reports, which are copies of the student-submitted papers, with underlined and color-coded sections. Those sections with suspected plagiarism will include links to the Internet source from which it was either copied or paraphrased. These highlighted sections and an overall plagiarism matching score give students and professors a concrete view of what areas need rewriting or documentation.
