Summer Project 2008

Abstract
Write a clear and concise overview with descriptive information about your project (120 words or less). Be sure to include the location of your project and time span.
My proposal is to learn about making movies and watching movies. I plan to learn about videography so I can help our campus and others learn to create video content for our new iTunes U sites. For cinema, our theater teacher and I are creating a hybrid learning community. Both the cinema and literature courses are new to me, so there is a need to learn more about these disciplines. I plan to spend first summer session learning about video formats and how to use video editing software on the PC at home and in our Teaching & Learning Center. I want to use two weeks in second summer session learning about cinema and its possible relationship to certain banned literature.
Purpose
Explain the general purpose of your project. This is what you want to do and why you want to do it. Outline your project in greater detail by listing specific goals, the objectives within each goal, and the steps and tasks that you anticipate doing to accomplish them. Why are these relevant to your discipline or education? What outcomes do you anticipate?
I feel as if I am a podcasting evangelist for the district, running podcasting workshops through MCLI for two years now. Creating video podcasts is just another extension of that, and now that iTunes U is coming on board at most colleges, I see the need to expand my workshop offerings. Creating video is nothing new, but the new digital formats have changed and the software used to edit has changed, especially on the PC side. My goal is to learn those new video formats and the codecs that go along with working with them, and to choose a feasible video editing program and learn to use it to create videos. Next, our theater teacher, Julie Holston, and I are creating a hybrid learning community that will include HUM205: Intro to Cinema, ENH295: Banned Books & Censorship and ENG101/102: Freshman Composition. My second goal of this project is to prepare myself for this team teaching assignment for next spring that will hopefully increase both the understanding of content in the cinema and literature classes for students while teaching them to write for those specific disciplines. My primary role at SMCC is a writing instructor, so I need to do as much reading this summer about the history of cinema and banned books and censorship as possible. The course we are planning is a technology enhanced, media rich course where knowledge gained from both sides of my proposed project will be utilized.

My objectives for this project are to:
•Compile a list of software programs that faculty can purchase and use to edit video.
•Research, analyze and choose one program to learn to create videos.
•Shoot, import, edit and export video using a video editing software program made for PC.
•Conduct research on banned books and movies in the U.S. and examine the relationships between cinema and banned books in the US.
•Learn about the history of cinema in the US.

The following are the steps and tasks that I anticipate doing to accomplish these goals and objectives.
•Research video editing software for the PC and study the different video formats and file conversion software.
•Choose 3 programs, download and install trial versions. Complete upgrades to my PC if necessary.
•Experiment with transferring, importing, editing different video formats and exporting video in the 3 trial versions.
•Purchase and install the best of the 3 video editing programs.
•Practice shooting, importing, editing and exporting video in the new program.
•Create a completed video and upload to iTunes U and YouTube.
•Create a wiki page of resources about video formats, file conversion options, and available software programs.
•Research to explore why people ban books, its results, and rights to free speech and intellectual freedom.
•Visit an online special exhibit of books that have been the objects of censorship or censorship attempts and other websites devoted to banned books week.
•Read cinema book, Flashback: Brief History of Film.
•Create a wiki page with a list of books and movies to explore later.

These videography objectives are relevant to education because they are directly related to improving distance education environments, and distance and online learning are of crucial importance to the future of education. The cinema and banned books objectives are relevant to my discipline because educators are realizing that writing instruction can no longer be confined to the English classroom. As a writing instructor primarily, my goals with this project will help me bring writing instruction into the cinema and literature setting.

The outcomes I anticipate are two fold. First, I anticipate a wealth of resources for videography to be compiled and shared throughout the district, and second, a very dynamic and unique hybrid learning community will be created as a result of my learning more about the other two pieces of the community.
Professional Growth
Describe in concrete terms what professional growth you hope to attain. Identify specific skills and knowledge you hope to learn. Explain why this growth is important to you and describe its relevancy to your teaching discipline or other responsibilities.
Professional growth for me with this project is huge. I’ve taught Freshman Composition for 14 years, and although I have a literature background, I’ve done very little teaching in the field. What I am proposing is broadening my abilities to teach other humanities classes, mainly cinema and a specialized literature course. I’m hoping this opportunity will jump start my growing disdain for teaching college writing by giving me something different and more exciting to explore. The professional growth is my increased knowledge of the history of cinema and banned books and censorship in America and my ability to teach other courses in the future.

In addition, learning about videography will hopefully enrich the online teaching and learning experience for both myself and my future students in my hybrid and online classes. By learning videography I will be able to not only use a video editing program to create videos, but I will also be able to continue to share best practices in teaching utilizing technology with my fellow faculty at SMCC and the district. This type of learning and sharing is important to me. The information gathered will also be useful to an institution that is on the verge of beginning its iTunes U implementation, and the use of such an innovative program can help separate its online offerings from others in the district.
Benefits
Select the primary area of benefit: Benefits to the college
What benefit is this project to the group checked above? How will this project benefit the identified group? How do you currently interact with that group, and how will your project impact that interaction? How will this project enhance the group in terms of skills, techniques, and knowledge gained? How will you share what you have learned with the group in observable/specific ways?
This project will benefit my colleagues and my college by giving us access to a new tool to use in our implementation of online and hybrid courses at SMCC. I have always been involved in activities in the district that allow for me to share my knowledge of the use of technology in education. I presently share my resources and knowledge about audio podcasting through MCLI workshops. I hope to do the same with the knowledge I gain from this project so that any faculty interested in creating a course that includes video podcasts will have a resource to go to. I spend a good portion of my time on campus in the Teaching and Learning Center where I am often asked about how I use technology in my teaching, and I have given many an impromptu demonstration on some technique, as well as scheduled presentations. This project will give me one more technology tool to share with faculty through my own knowledge and the research I’ve gathered. Presently I maintain a repository of research and how-to information on technology use in the classroom on a personal wiki: http://drcoop.pbwiki.com. I use this wiki to do presentations for MCLI on podcasting and for SMC faculty on various other technologies, including blogging, RSS feeds, wikis, social networking, and Web 2.0. I plan to include the information I gain from this project on videography to this wiki.

The second half of my proposal benefits my college mostly by allowing me to gain the knowledge necessary to design and teach a new innovative hybrid learning community. Our college is trying to increase enrollments by offering more hybrid courses for students, and we hope to make our Banned Books & Movies one of the first hybrid learning communities.
